Case Study 3-Residential School

A private residential alternative school within a larger mental health program. School and school related activities were frequently interrupted because of student behavior.

The Problem

Teachers were often frustrated because of student behavior and a lack of effective school operating systems to support learning activities. Instruction techniques often focused primarily on academic activities with little consideration for providing social emotional activity and opportunity.

What Was Not Working

Students were frequently involved in negative and/or unsafe behavior choices; behaviors ranged from disrespectful comments to bullying and even physical aggression. At many times school staff and students felt unsafe.

What We Did

We began by assessing the climate focusing on behavior and academic engagement. After sharing results we created a coalition of stakeholders to develop and implement a multiyear action plan. Using the Circle of Courage (Brendtro, Brokenleg, & Van Bockern) as a guide and training tool we developed a high-quality academic and social emotional culture within the school

The Results

Student outcomes improved dramatically both in academic achievement and social emotional achievement. Students and educators were pleased with the strong sense of safety and wellness exhibited by students and staff.
